Snow: You Gotta Love It!

new: Holiday Dinner Dance

“Home for the Holidays” saw over 100 dancers don some daring duds, dine on delicious dinner, drool over delightful decorations, and dance dynamically to DJ Dillard’s ditties. (Enough alliteration, already!)

What a wonderful evening! Thanks to the Special Events Committee for making the evening a night to remember. Special congratulations to Adrienne Wanek, recipient of the President’s Volunteer of the Year award. Adrienne has coordinated decorations for the din/dan for more than ten years!

new: Toys for Tots

Many thanks to the SNC membership for their community and holiday spirit. Committee Chairman, Ann Clark, reports that Swing’n’Country received a total of 52 items which were dropped off on Saturday, December 6.

Hania Richmond Kicks off 2009

Hania Richmond starts off 2009 with Wednesday lessons and our single dance in January. If you aren’t familiar with Hania, here she is in action at Dallas in a pro-am competition, earlier this year. Join us and discover how it’s actually left-brained geometry that can make your waltz look right-brained smooth and curving.

As always, you can save registration time by downloading the form for a monthly package or single lesson and having it ready at the door.

December 27: Saturday. Chicago Dance News dance is held the fourth Saturday of each month at Ballroom City, 207 N. Villa Avenue, Villa Park, Illinois 60181. Host Brian Wong will contact Happenings as soon as his December theme is planned.

modified: January 2 – 4, 2009: Spotlight Dance Challenge, New Year's Event. Milwaukee, Wisconsin. SNC is sponsoring a table. This event features Doug Rousar’s famous dance “tournament” as well as free Jack & Jill competition. The staff includes our own Maren Oslac as well as US Open winners Kellese Key and Annmarie LaFramboise.

January 22, 2009: Thursday. Julie Hein offers her Spins and Turns workshops from 7:00-8:30 pm (includes a practice period)...just in time for Mario's workshops, which begin the following day. Learn chaine and pivot turns both from front and back-line of-dance positions. This is an excellent class worth repeating. DVDs of the class will be available for purchase. It will be held at Ballroom City, 207 N. Villa Avenue, Villa Park, Illinois 60181.

modified: January 23 – 25, 2009: Mario in Chicago. Friday-Sunday workshops. DanceMasters sponsors a whole weekend of our favorite Swing Daddy, Mario Robau. Saturday features West Coast Swing workshops, and Sunday workshops focus on Hustle. All activities will take place at Centre at North Park, Franklin Park, Illinois. Mondays: Jill Popovich teaches Pilates in Arlington Heights starting at 7:00 pm. Pilates will help dancers of all levels learn to move their bodies more efficiently, resulting in smoother dancing, longer endurance, and more flexibility. You will feel better too! Contact Jill to learn more or for directions to the class.

Wednesdays: SNC Wednesday lessons feature Hania Richmond teaching Waltz in January.

Thursdays: Maren Oslac teaches a four-week series of Two Step classes through the month of December at Heart & Sole Dance Studio, 7038 183rd St., Tinley Park. Two Step 101 begins at 7:00 pm, and Two Step 102 at 8:00 pm. (map)

Congratulations to the winners at the US Open Swing Dance Championships. Check out winners’ videos, and see what you missed.

Congratulations to the winners at Christmas in Dixie, held in Birmingham which was, by all accounts, considerably warmer than Chicago.

Out-of-Town Happenings

December 29, 2008 – Jan 4, 2009 Worlds XVII Country Dance World Championships. Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort, Orlando, Florida. SNC has quite a few competitors who will be celebrating their New Year’s Eve in Florida this year. (details)

March 13 – 15, 2009: The Chicago Classic returns for its second year. Sponsored by the Chicago Swing Dance Foundation, The Classic brings the best and the brightest of West Coast Swing to Chicago.

April 23 – 26, 2009: Swing Dance America 2009. Grand Geneva Resort and Spa, Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Lots of workshops, lots of open dancing, competitions in both Swing and Hustle in two ballrooms.
