Effective with this issue Happenings will be emailed on a monthly basis. We’ll give you everything you need to know to plan your dance schedule. Not to worry, we’ll be sending out lesson and dance reminders each week.

Next time you see Ken, please give him a huge thank you for his last three years of service to SNC as a Happenings Editor. Ken also received the SNC President’s Award in 2007 for his many hours of volunteering with a smile. You’ll find him often dj-ing for SNC and XDance.

DVD Recorder Wanted – Wednesday Lessons

Is there a reader out there who can faithfully come to the Wednesday lessons to video record and make CDs for the students? The SNC Board is looking for someone to take over this volunteer position effective with the lessons beginning in January. Contact Roger Peterson if you think you can help carry on this value-added benefit.

Jeff Sanchez Teaches Cha Cha
First Dance of the Month and Wednesday lessons

Jeff Sanchez will be teaching Cha Cha, a rhythmic dance born in Latin America. It has fast small steps and is sometimes called the Cha Cha Cha.

Jeff, along with Maren Oslac and Julie Hein, helps produce Swing City Chicago, a yearly hometown Swing event which takes place at the end of October.

When: Wednesdays, Oct. 7, 14, 21, 28
Where: The Centre at North Park

Beginner: 7:30 to 8:25 pm
Intermediate: 8:35 to 9:30 pm

Mike and Debbe Lapina Teach

East Coast Swing the Second Dance of October

Mike and Debbe will be teaching East Coast Swing, a dance known for its six-count triple step form. It originated at the height of the Swing Era around 1942. Mike and Debbe also teach at Windy City’s Jitterbug Club.

50/50 Raffle at Second Dance of October

There will be a 50/50 Raffle at the October 16 dance. Tickets are $1 each; ten for $5; and an arm’s length for $10. Not to worry, we’ll find someone with a wide wing span to measure these out!

Other Chicagoland Happenings

October 3 and October 24: Saturdays. The Chicago Rebels holds its dances the first and third Saturdays of the month at The Centre at North Park, 10040 Addison Ave., Franklin Park, 60131. Concurrent beginner and intermediate/advanced lessons are held from 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm followed by open dancing until midnight. Fall birthdays (Oct., Nov., and Dec.) will be held at the October 3 dance. (map)

October 3-4: Saturday-Sunday. Chicago Country Music Festival. Grant Park. Performers include Miranda Lambert, John Rich, and Lee Ann Womack. Visit the website for more details. (map)

October 9 and October 23: X Dance holds its dances the second and fourth Fridays at The Centre at North Park, 10040 Addison Ave., Franklin Park, 60131. There is a free beginner’s dance at 7:30 pm, followed by an intermediate/advanced lesson at 8:00 pm. Details can be found on their web site. (map)

October 10 and October 24: Saturday. Chicago Dance News begins hosting two dances per month Ballroom City, 207 S. Villa Ave., Villa Park, 60181. The 8:30 pm lesson is followed by open dancing from 9:00 pm until midnight. The first dance of the month will be predominantly swing; the second dance will be predominantly country and swing. (map)

October 29-Nov 1: Swing City Chicago. The Westin Hotel, Lombard. Now you can dance with the “Early Birds” on Thursday beginning with a West Coast Swing lesson from Mario Robau from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm and open dancing from 8:30 pm until ????. Come one! Come all! To sit at a table with your friends, contact Leah Noparstak. West Coast Swing Jack and Jill competitors earn World Swing Dance Council points. Hosted by Maren Oslac, Jeff Sanchez and Julie Hein.

Mondays: Maren Oslac hosts a four week series of West Coast Swing lessons during October at Heart & Sole Dance Studio, 7038 183rd St., Tinley Park, 60477. WCS 101 begins at 7:00 pm and is followed by WCS 102 at 8:00 pm. (map)

Mondays: Jill Popovich teaches Pilates in Arlington Heights starting at 7:00 pm. Pilates helps dancers of all levels learn to move their bodies more efficiently, resulting in smoother dancing, longer endurance, and more flexibility. You will feel better too! Contact Jill to learn more or for directions to the class.

Wednesdays: Jeff Sanchez teaches Cha Cha in October at SNC.

Thursdays: Alisa Winkler teaches West Coast Swing during the month of October at Studio Viva! in Palatine from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Contact Alisa for more details. (map)

Out of Town Happenings

October 8-11: Boogie by the Bay. This is one of the best events on the NASDE circuit. Great dancers, great competition, great music. The Chicago Rebels has a table at this event. To purchase a ticket, contact Nancy Tuzzolino by phone at 312-953-3336, or via e-mail.

October 16-18: Paradise Country Dance Festival. Sheraton Suites. Pomona, California. Paradise in Pomona? Several local dancers are trying this one on for size. Best of dancing to them!

October 24: Swing N’ Country, Madison. A brand new place for country couples located in Stoughton, Wisconsin 53589 (not part of our own club, but sister club). Hania Richmond is the opening act and her groupies will be following her up there. Contact Judi if you want to car pool.
