Last Friday’s Polka Lesson

Excellent instruction by Jon Serletic and polka music that is just plain happy put smiles on dancers faces this past Friday night. Exuberance is an understatement describing this dance as water consumption was at an all time high. Thank you, Jon!

SNC Event Table – Pre-Event Special

Wisconsin Dance Challenge: The first SNC table has been filled for this event, so we’re starting a second. Contact Leah Noparstak if you’d like to be part of the 2nd SNC table as well as get a great deal: workshops and late night buffets are included in the weekend price.

new: A second Happenings editors is traveling abroad. Julie Hein is visiting her son in Tokyo and is doing some site-seeing. We can’t wait to hear her trip report!

June 11 - August 23: Chicago Summer Dance Festival. Grant Park. Group dance instruction in everything from ballroom to country line dancing on a 3,500 square foot open-air floor at the Spirit of Music Garden in Grant Park.

new: June 12: Friday. X Dance holds a dance at The Centre at North Park, 10040 Addison Ave., Franklin Park, 60131. Doors open at 7:00 pm. Lesson TBA. Open dancing 9:00 pm til midnight. (map)

new: June 20: Saturday. The Chicago Rebels hold a West Coast Swing dance at The Centre at North Park 10040 Addison Ave., Franklin Park. Lessons are from 8:00 to 9:00 pm, followed by open dancing until midnight. (map)

modified: June 27: Saturday. Brian Wong, editor of Chicago Dance News, hosts Double Dance at Ballroom City, 207 Villa Avenue, Villa Park, 60181. The theme is Red, White and Blue Jam. Active and veteran US Armed Forced who wear their uniform or clothes with a military logo get in half price. (map)

June 27: Saturday. Studio Viva presents a Swing and Hustle Dance from 8:00pm - Midnight. Studio is located at 41 E. Northwest Hwy, Palatine 60067. (map)

modified: July 2 - 4: Sweet Home Chicago. Wyndham Hotel O’Hare. Party, dance, eat, dance, shop, dance (no competition) with the folks from the Windy City Jitterbug Club. Julie Hein is a featured instructor.

Mondays: Maren Oslac teaches a four-week series of West Coast Swing through the month of June at Heart & Sole Dance Studio, 7038 183rd St., Tinley Park, 60477. WCS 101 begins at 7:00 pm and is followed by WCS 102 at 8:00 pm. (map)

Mondays: Jill Popovich teaches Pilates in Arlington Heights starting at 7:00 pm. Pilates helps dancers of all levels learn to move their bodies more efficiently, resulting in smoother dancing, longer endurance, and more flexibility. You will feel better too! Competition Corner

modified: Circle City Classic results are posted. The event was held May 29 through May 30 and we hear the Saturday night show was fantastic. The SNC website has photos to show you.

Out of Town Happenings

new: June 12- 13: Orange Blossom Dance Marriott, Orlando, Florida. This fully sanctioned UCWDC event has some SNC folks competing. Championship swing dancers Christopher and Katrina will be teaching.

Save These Dates:

July 11: WWII USO themed Swing Dance. Green Bay, Wisconsin. Hosted by the National Railroad Museum. The event includes a live swing band, cash bar, food, and WWII re-enactors. Contact Jacqueline Frank for more information. (map)

July 24: Swing’n’Country invites one and all to its annual mid-summer party. The theme is “In the Good Old Summertime” and pizza will be served.

July 17 - 19: The North East Wisconsin Rebels Swing Dance Club presents the 9th annual Wisconsin Dance Challenge. Radisson Hotel, Green Bay, Wisconsin. Event Directors are Vivian Hahn and Doug Rousar. Contact Leah Noparstak if you’d like to be part of the SNC table. Chris VanHouton and Julie Hein are on staff. Matt Cotherman and April Prince are among the featured DJs.

August 7: Swing’n’Country presents its pre-Chicagoland dance. Get ready for Chicago’s very own dance festival. The dance’s theme, “In the Heat of the Night,” features an Ice Cream Social.

modified: August 21 - 23: Chicagoland Dance Festival. Crown Plaza Chicago O’Hare. Look forward to workshops, open dancing and competitions at CDF. See if its reputation as an event that is fun to the MAX is true. A tentative schedule has been posted.

August 27 - 30: Swingin’ Dance Party. Drawbridge Inn, Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky. Thirteen hours of workshops and open dancing with no competition. Staff includes Maren Oslac and Jeff Sanchez. Contact Maren to sit at a table with your Chicago friends.

new: September 17-20: Meet Me In St. Louis. St. Louis Renaissance Hotel, St. Louis, Missouri. Swing Dance Championship. Chicago’s Maren Oslac is on staff.
